Lesson 2b - how to deal with access database problems

protect the database

As you start to build the database you should be aware that things can go wrong along the way.

Your first line of defence is a good backup. This is simple in Access since it involves only one file. On a regular basis, make a copy of the database file and store it securely.

You have to remember that if you have to recover the database from the backup all the transactions that were done on the database since the last backup will be lost.

repair the database

If you think the database may be corrupted, you may use the Access "Compact and Repair" tool available from the Menu. This may help, depending on the severity of thr problem.

use a repair tool

In many situations where the database has been damaged beyond a simple repair and a backup is not available or is not recent enough, it may be necessary to call upon some heavy duty help.

The best software tools available to recover Access files can be found by searching online or by contacting some of the advertisers in these pages.

Note that there is a cost to buy the software but you have to weigh that against the cost of lost business, lost productivity and customer confidence if you try to fix it yourself.
